My name is Svenja and I spent ten months in Crete, Nebraska. When I first got my host family I didn’t even know where Nebraska is at but I was really excited to see such a different way of living.
My host family was a perfect match and I could not have been happier anywhere else. My Dad taught at my High School and my Mom worked at a Marketing agency. I also had two siblings, who were grown up and moved out already. My sister was a German teacher at a High School an hour away from us and my brother worked for the National Guard. He and his wife had a baby girl while I was there so I got to experience the baby announcement, the gender reveal, a baby shower and became an exchange-aunt :).
I spent a lot of time with my family. We had season tickets for the Nebraska Huskers, so we went to the football stadium every Saturday during the fall after “tailgating” with friends beforehand.
We did a lot of trips around Nebraska and to other states and even went to Yellowstone National Park.
With my friends I enjoyed going to the movies, going out to eat or do other fun activities like laser-tag. Sometimes we also just hung out at someone's house, played games, did movie nights or had sleep-overs.
The first week I was in Crete, I had Band Camp and I met so many great people there. We joked around, marched on the football field, rehearsed and went out to lunch together. It was a great time. I also did Volleyball and Track. I was also a member of multiple school clubs and organisations. Looking back, I think it’s the most important thing to be involved in school activities because I made most of my friends there even before school started, so it took a lot of pressure off me, since I already knew a lot of people on my first day of school.
High School was a lot of fun. I chose Algebra 2 Honors, Band, Honors Biology, English 2, Family Consumer Science, AP Government & Politics, Color and Design, Career and Financial Literacy, and Health. The American “School Spirit” really is the best thing about High School. It’s a lot of fun cheering on your school teams in various sports and creative competitions.
This year went by so fast and I have to say I really miss my family and friends and I can’t wait “coming home” to Nebraska again. It truly was the best year of my life.
